Average Mean Temperatures for Major
Okanagan Centres
|
Thompson Okanagan is an area renowned for its perfect climate. Located in south
central British Columbia in the Okanagan Basin, the area receives much milder
weather than other areas in BC's interior and is often compared to America's
Napa Valley. Lake Okanagan, stretching through the area, also influences the
weather, bringing some humidity and cool breezes.
Hot summertime temperatures, with cool evenings, from May until September are
perfect for camping holidays and boating on the large lakes that line the valleys.
These temperatures also contribute to the Okanagan's semi-arid environment,
which, with a little water, accounts for the abundance of orchards, gardens
and wine farms in the area. Because of which, the Okanagan is also known as
Canada's Fruit Basket.
From November until April, the region, its relatively mild winter temperatures,
snowy terrain, and natural beauty also make the Okanagan a perfect winter destination,
with averages that seldom get as cold as -10°C (14°F). The Cariboo, Monashee,
and Selkirk mountain ranges collect an abundance of snow, creating some of Canada's
best powder skiing.
While climate is mainly homogenous throughout the region, temperatures and
conditions do vary from town to town. Kelowna, situated on the shores of Lake
Okanagan, experiences more humidity than Osoyoos, a town in the south that is
a true desert. Due to these subtleties in climate, the Okanagan's flora and
fauna also varies throughout the region.
